fwc home schooling ideas

We know that it can be difficult to keep the kids occupied while in lockdown so we have put together a few adventure-based activities to keep the little ones amused. We’d love you to share your artwork and stories by sending to info@forceswiveschallenge.org or message us on FWC Facebook. Hope you enjoy them!

  1. design your own poster for fwc virtual pen y fan

Think about what key information you want to put on there:

  • When is it taking place?

  • How do you find more information?

  • Who can take part?

  • What picture are you going to put on?

  • Are you going to hand draw or do it on the computer?

2. calculate how many flights of your stairs = height of pen y fan

  • Research the height of Pen y Fan

  • Measure the height of one step in your house x the number of stairs = total height of the flight of your stairs

  • Divide height of Pen y Fan by height of stairs (be careful converting cm to m and vice versa!)

  • Divide up between members of household/family members or get a team of friends together. Are you all going to do the same?!

3. map reading for beginners

OS Map Home Learning.jpeg

Grab an Ordnance Survey map (can search online for OS map images if you don’t have a hard copy). Can the kids find the following:

  • River

  • Wood

  • Road

  • Public House

  • Church with steeple

  • Church with tower

  • Phone box

  • Visitors Centre

  • Spot height

  • Train track

4. PLOT HEIGHTS Of the MOUNTAINS FWC has CLIMBED ON A GRAPH

Graph mountains.JPG

Research the height of all the mountains FWC have climbed. Here’s a reminder:

  • Pen y Fan

  • Waun Fach

  • Scafell Pike

  • Snowdon

  • Tryfan

  • La Parva

  • Dona Ines

  • San Francisco

  • Ben Nevis

  • Kilimanjaro

  • Ojos del Salado

  • Pen y Ghent

  • Whernside

  • Ingleborough

Formulate a table with heights (make sure all in the same units!)

Plot a graph - you could add mountains you want to climb in the future or mountains your family have climbed.

5. write your own mountain adventure story

Using this picture for inspiration, write your own adventure. This might take you on an exciting quest or mission to a faraway land with a journey full of action, perils and problems to solve. A few things to think about …

  • Who will go with you?

  • Who will you meet?

  • What risks/danger will you face?

  • How will you overcome them?

  • What will your surroundings look like?

  • Use all your senses to describe the adventure (smell, touch, hearing, sight, taste).

  • How will it end?
